Painters in Ainslie, ACT
Ainslie is one of Canberra’s original garden suburbs, at the foot of Mount Ainslie. Its older homes reward slow, careful preparation more than speed.
- Early timber windows, doors and facades
- Lead-safe preparation and plaster repairs
- Plaster walls and original joinery
An early garden suburb
Ainslie, ACT was among the first suburbs built in Canberra’s inner north, with early homes from the 1920s and 1930s set on tree-lined streets below Mount Ainslie. Later decades added postwar houses, and some blocks have since been renovated or rebuilt.
Some streets in Ainslie may be subject to heritage controls. If you are considering a change of exterior colour or materials, check what applies to your property before work starts. We can help you choose a scheme that suits the age of the house.

Timber, plaster and old paint
Early Canberra homes often have timber windows and doors, plaster interiors and many layers of old paint. Paint used before 1970 commonly contained lead, so we avoid dry sanding, heat guns and open burning-off. Instead we wet-scrape, contain debris and clean up thoroughly.
Timber that has dried out and split needs consolidating and filling before it’s primed; otherwise the new paint will crack along the same lines. Inside, fine cracks in old plaster are cut out and filled properly rather than skimmed over.
Older paintwork
Paint on homes built before 1970 may contain lead (and some later paint can too), so we recommend testing and use wet, low-dust preparation. Some streets may be subject to heritage controls, so check before changing exterior colours. More on painting in Inner North Canberra.
Ainslie painting questions
Do I need approval to change the colour of my house in Ainslie?
It depends on your property. Some parts of Ainslie may be subject to heritage controls, so check with the ACT Heritage Council or the planning directorate (EPSDD) before changing exterior colours.
How do you deal with lead paint?
We treat pre-1970 paint as potentially containing lead: no dry sanding or burning off, wet preparation methods, contained debris and a thorough clean-up.
Our window frames are cracked and dry. Can they be saved?
Often, yes. Dry, split timber can be consolidated, filled, primed and sealed. Badly rotted sections may need a carpenter, and we’ll point those out.
