Painting for Canberra’s climate
Canberra has a climate that is hard on paint. Summers are hot and dry with strong UV, winters bring frequent hard frosts, and the temperature can swing widely between a frosty morning and a mild afternoon. Exterior surfaces expand and contract through those swings every day, which opens joints, cracks brittle paint and lets moisture in.
We plan exterior work around the weather. Paint needs a dry surface and suitable temperatures to cure, so in winter we start once the frost has cleared and finish before dew settles, and in summer we avoid painting surfaces in direct afternoon heat. Flexible sealants at joints, the right primer for each surface and quality exterior topcoats all help a Canberra paint job last.
A century of housing, in layers
Canberra was built in stages, and each district reflects the era it was developed in. The inner north and inner south hold the city’s earliest homes from the 1920s and 1930s alongside postwar houses and newer apartments. Woden Valley and Weston Creek grew through the 1960s and 1970s, Belconnen from the late 1960s, and Tuggeranong through the 1970s to the 1990s. Gungahlin has been built mostly since the 1990s, and the Molonglo Valley is the newest district, developed from the 2010s.
That history matters for painting. Homes built before 1970 may have lead-based paint in their older layers, and homes built before about 1990 may contain asbestos in materials such as some fibre-cement sheeting. Newer homes bring different issues: builder-grade paint, render that cracks as it settles, and contemporary finishes that show every flaw. We adjust our preparation to suit.

Canberra painting FAQs
Which parts of Canberra do you cover?
All of Canberra: the Inner North and Inner South, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden Valley, Weston Creek, Tuggeranong and the Molonglo Valley. If your suburb isn’t listed on this page, we still work there.
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Quotes are free and no-obligation, and we prefer to see the job in person so the price reflects the real condition of the surfaces.
Can you paint in winter?
Interiors, yes, all year round. Exterior work in winter depends on the weather: we work in the warmer, dry part of the day and avoid frost, rain and dew.
Are you licensed and insured?
Our licence number is 474930C. Licence and insurance details are available on request, including for strata and property managers.
