Painters in Inner South Canberra
Some of Canberra’s oldest homes sit beside new apartments in the Inner South. We paint both, with the extra care older timber, plaster and paint layers need.
- Lead-safe preparation on older paintwork
- Timber windows, doors and weatherboards
- Heritage-sympathetic colour schemes
- Apartment and strata common areas
Canberra’s first garden suburbs
The Inner South was among the first parts of Canberra to be built. Suburbs such as Kingston, Griffith and Forrest were laid out from the 1920s as part of the city’s garden-city plan, with generous verges, street trees and modest cottages alongside larger homes. Building continued through the postwar decades, and in more recent years apartments and townhouses have been added around the town centres and the lake.
That mix means an Inner South painting job can be almost anything: original timber windows on a 1920s cottage, a 1960s brick home in Deakin that only needs its eaves and fascias refreshed, or the common areas of a newer strata block in Kingston.
What older homes ask of a painter
Paint applied to Australian homes before 1970 commonly contained lead, so we recommend testing older surfaces and prepare them with lead-safe methods before anything is sanded or scraped. Original timber joinery often needs careful filling and priming rather than replacement, and many homes carry decades of paint layers that have to be assessed before a new system goes on.
Parts of the Inner South may be subject to heritage controls, so if you are planning a change of exterior colour, check what applies to your property first. We can help you choose colours that suit the era of the home.

Inner South Canberra painting questions
Do you paint heritage homes in the Inner South?
Yes. We prepare older surfaces carefully and can suggest colours suited to the period of the home. If your property may be covered by heritage controls, check the requirements before changing exterior colours.
My house was built before 1970. Is the old paint a problem?
It may contain lead. We treat older paintwork as potentially lead-based and use preparation methods that avoid spreading dust, rather than dry sanding or burning off.
Do you work on apartments as well as houses?
Yes. We paint apartment interiors for owners and tenants moving in or out, and strata common areas such as foyers, stairwells and corridors.
