What does painting cost in Canberra?
Every job is different, so we don’t publish prices. Here’s what actually drives the cost of a paint job, and how we work out your quote.
- No-obligation, itemised quotes
- Preparation spelled out
- Paint system listed
- Licensed & insured
Surface condition and preparation
Preparation is usually the biggest variable in any painting quote. A wall in good condition needs a clean, light sand and patching of a few marks. A weathered exterior might need loose paint scraped back, cracks raked out and filled, bare timber primed and joints re-sealed before any topcoat goes on.
Older homes add steps. Paint on homes built before 1970 may contain lead, which calls for slower, low-dust preparation and careful clean-up. Mould, water stains, nicotine or smoke staining, and stained timber being converted to paint all need specific primers. This is the work that makes a paint job last, and it is why two homes of the same size can be priced very differently.
Access, height and the site
A single-storey home on a flat block can often be painted from ladders and planks. Two-storey walls, high gables, raked ceilings, stairwells and steep blocks may need scaffolding, an elevated work platform or extra safety equipment, and that is part of the cost.
The site matters too: how much furniture has to be moved and protected, how far equipment has to be carried, whether gardens and paving need covering, and, for apartments, lift bookings and common-area protection.
Interior or exterior
Interior work is priced by what’s in the rooms: ceilings, walls, doors, frames, skirting and windows, plus the detail involved in cutting in around cornices, picture rails and joinery. A room with lots of doors and trim takes longer than its floor area suggests.
Exterior work depends on the materials and their exposure. Brick homes often only need their timber eaves, fascias and windows painted, while weatherboard, render and fibre-cement walls need the full surface prepared and coated. North- and west-facing walls in Canberra take the most sun and usually need the most attention.
Number of coats and colour changes
Repainting in a similar colour usually needs two topcoats over a sound surface. Big colour changes, especially from dark to light or onto strong reds and yellows, can need an extra coat or a tinted undercoat. Bare timber, new plaster and patched areas need primer or sealer before topcoats.
More colours also mean more time. A single wall colour with one white for ceilings and trims is quicker than separate colours for each room or feature walls throughout.
The paint system
The products make a difference to both price and lifespan. Quality interior paints are more washable and hide better; exterior systems designed for strong UV, frost and timber movement last longer on Canberra homes. Specialty products such as stain-blocking primers, mould-resistant bathroom finishes, heat-reflective exterior coatings and decorative finishes each have their own cost.
Strata, commercial and scheduling
For strata buildings, offices and shops, the way the job is run affects the price. After-hours or weekend work, staged access so residents and staff can still use the building, inductions and site rules, and coordination with strata or facilities managers all take time that a quote should account for.

Painting cost questions
Why don’t you list prices or a cost per square metre?
Because condition, preparation and access vary so much between homes that a per-metre figure is usually misleading. We give a free, itemised quote after seeing the job, so the price reflects your property.
Why do painting quotes vary so much?
Mostly because of preparation and products. A lower quote may leave out filling, priming or a second coat, or use a cheaper paint. Ask each painter what preparation and paint system is included so you compare like with like.
Can I reduce the cost?
Sometimes. Clearing rooms before we arrive, keeping to one wall colour and one white for trims, staging the work, or painting only the most exposed exterior walls this year can all help. We can suggest options when we quote.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Quotes are free and no-obligation.
