A 1960s suburb next to Dickson
Downer, ACT was built mainly during the 1960s, with brick and some timber-clad homes on established blocks, a small local centre and easy access to the Dickson shops. Like much of the inner north, it has seen a number of renovations and townhouse redevelopments.
Ready for a thorough repaint
After sixty-odd years of Canberra weather, Downer homes typically need their exterior timber scraped back and primed, cracked render or plaster repaired, and interiors updated from older colour schemes. Where homes are clad in timber or fibre-cement rather than brick, there is more exterior surface to prepare, and older fibre-cement may contain asbestos.

Clad homes and brick homes in Downer
Downer’s 1960s housing includes both brick homes and homes clad in timber or fibre-cement, and the difference matters. On a brick home, the exterior work is mostly eaves, fascias and windows. On a clad home, the whole wall surface needs preparing and coating. Fibre-cement installed before the 2003 asbestos ban may contain asbestos and is cleaned gently, never sanded or drilled. Weatherboards are scraped back, bare timber primed and gaps filled before topcoats.
A note on mid-century homes
On brick homes of this era, the painted timber is usually the priority. Older layers may contain lead, so preparation is low-dust and contained. More on painting in Inner North Canberra.
Common questions
Our weatherboards are peeling badly. Can they be saved?
Usually. We scrape back loose paint, treat and prime bare timber and fill gaps before repainting. Rotten boards need replacing by a carpenter first.
Do you paint townhouses in Downer?
Yes, for individual owners and owners corporations.
Can weatherboards be repainted a lighter colour?
Yes. Lighter colours also reduce heat stress on timber in full sun.
