A suburb in transition

Narrabundah, ACT developed mostly after the Second World War, with a mix of brick, timber-framed and clad homes. In recent decades many blocks have been renovated, rebuilt or redeveloped as townhouses, so a single street can include several eras of construction.

Older clad homes may have fibre-cement sheeting. In homes built before about 1990, that sheeting may contain asbestos. We don’t sand, drill or water-blast suspected asbestos materials, and we will tell you if something should be tested before work begins.

Matching the material

Timber weatherboards need loose paint scraped back and bare timber primed. Fibre-cement needs gentle cleaning and a sealer suited to the substrate. Render needs cracks repaired with flexible filler. Treating each surface correctly is what stops a repaint peeling after a couple of Canberra winters.

Townhouses and renovations

For newer townhouses and renovated homes, the work is usually lighter: refreshing builder-grade interiors, adding a feature wall, or tidying up exterior trims. For townhouse complexes, we can quote for the owners corporation as well as individual owners.

Older paint layers

Homes built before 1970 may have lead-based paint in their older layers. We recommend testing, and prepare surfaces wet rather than dry sanding. More on painting in Inner South Canberra.

Narrabundah painting FAQs

Can old fibro walls be painted?

Often, yes, if the sheeting is in sound condition and isn’t disturbed. Pre-1990 sheeting may contain asbestos, so we clean it gently and never sand or drill it. If it’s damaged, get advice before any work.

Do you paint new townhouses?

Yes. Upgrading builder-grade paint to a washable finish is a common request.

Our house has three different claddings. Is that a problem?

Not at all. We prepare and prime each surface to suit its material, then finish with a consistent colour scheme.
