Established homes near the bush

O’Connor, ACT was largely developed in the 1950s and 1960s, with family homes on established blocks and Black Mountain Nature Reserve nearby. Over time, many houses have been renovated or extended, and some blocks have been redeveloped as townhouses.

Repainting a renovated home

Renovated homes often combine original walls with new plasterboard, or old timber with new cladding. The new and old materials absorb paint differently, so we prime them to match before applying topcoats. Without that step, extensions can look patchy next to the original house even when they’re painted the same colour.

    Scheduling

Exterior work is planned around frost, rain and heat; interiors around how you use the home.

Outside, through the seasons

Canberra’s big daily temperature range opens and closes timber joints, and winter frosts find any water that gets in. On O’Connor homes we pay close attention to window sills, the bottoms of doors and weatherboards, and anywhere sealant has failed. If your home was built before 1970, its older paint may contain lead, and we prepare it accordingly.

A note on mid-century homes

Paint on homes built before 1970 may contain lead (and some later paint can too), so we recommend testing and use wet, low-dust preparation. More on painting in Inner North Canberra.

Common questions

Our extension looks a different colour from the old house. Why?

New and old surfaces absorb paint differently, and older paint has faded. Priming both and repainting the whole elevation usually fixes it.

Do you repaint whole houses inside and out?

Yes. Full repaints inside and out are a common request, and we can stage interior and exterior work to suit you.

Is autumn a good time to paint outside?

Autumn is often a good window in Canberra, before frosts set in. We’ll suggest timing when we quote.
