Late-1960s Belconnen

Cook, ACT was developed in the late 1960s as part of Belconnen’s first wave of suburbs. It is mostly made up of detached family homes on established blocks, with a small local shopping centre.

Window frames and sills

On homes of this age, timber window frames and sills are often the weak point: water sits on horizontal surfaces, paint cracks along the joints, and the timber starts to soften. We scrape back, fill and consolidate, prime and seal before topcoats, and point out anything that needs a carpenter.

Getting a Cook house ready for the next decade

Cook is a compact, established suburb of family homes with a small local centre. Houses built from the late 1960s have been through several sets of owners, so it is common to find a patchwork of earlier repaints and repairs. We take the time to sort out what is sound and what isn’t: old filler that has shrunk, enamel that was painted over without primer, and windows that were sealed shut by earlier coats. Fixing those properly once means the new paint isn’t fighting the old problems for the next ten years.

A note on 1970s homes

Older exterior timber needs scraping back, priming and sealing. Suspect fibre-cement is left undisturbed, as it may contain asbestos. More on painting in Belconnen.

Cook painting questions

Our window sills are cracked and grey. Can they be painted?

Often, yes, after the timber is cleaned back, consolidated and primed. Rotten sections need a carpenter first.

Do you paint interiors as well?

Yes, inside and out.

Our windows were painted shut years ago. Can you free them?

We can cut through paint seals and free sashes during preparation. Broken hardware or sash cords need a carpenter.
