Sixty years of Curtin homes
Curtin, ACT was one of the earlier suburbs built in Woden Valley, in the 1960s, and much of its housing is brick family homes from that decade on established blocks, with renovations and some rebuilds since. Its local shops sit at the centre of the suburb.
A home of this age has usually been repainted several times, and the earliest layers may contain lead. Before anything is sanded or scraped, we recommend testing older paintwork, and we use wet, low-dust methods with debris contained and cleaned up.
Inside a 1960s home
Typical interior work includes repairing cracked ceilings and cornices, preparing old enamel doors and trims so new paint adheres, and treating mould in bathrooms that predate modern exhaust fans. We also update colour schemes, which often transforms how the rooms feel.

Outside: timber first
On the outside, timber window frames, eaves and fascias take the brunt of Canberra’s UV and frost. We repair and prime them before topcoats, and seal joints so moisture can’t get behind the paint.
Before work starts
Homes built before 1970 may have lead-based paint in their older layers. We recommend testing, and prepare surfaces wet rather than dry sanding. More on painting in Woden Valley.
Common questions
Should our old paint be tested for lead?
If your home was built before 1970, it’s sensible to assume older layers may contain lead or have it tested. Either way, we prepare those surfaces without dry sanding.
Our bathroom ceiling keeps going mouldy. Will painting fix it?
Paint alone won’t. We treat the mould and use a suitable primer and finish, but poor ventilation needs fixing too, usually with a working exhaust fan.
Do you paint homes in nearby Woden suburbs?
Yes. We work across Woden Valley and the rest of Canberra.
