Family homes from the 1970s

Kaleen, ACT was developed in the 1970s as part of Belconnen’s growth, and most of its housing is detached brick and brick-veneer homes from that period, with some later townhouses. After almost fifty years, the original timber and interior finishes on many of these homes have been repainted once or twice, or not at all.

Typical work on a Kaleen home

Outside, it’s usually the timber: eaves linings, fascias, barge boards, window frames and pergolas. Inside, it’s often a whole-house refresh, replacing dated feature colours, repairing cornice cracks and updating stained or varnished timber with paint.

Converting stained timber to paint takes more preparation than most people expect. The surface has to be cleaned, sanded and primed with a product that blocks tannins, or brown stains can bleed through a white finish.

Fibre-cement and older materials

Some 1970s homes have fibre-cement eaves linings or cladding. In homes built before about 1990, these may contain asbestos. We clean them gently and never sand, drill or water-blast suspected asbestos materials.

Before work starts

Homes built before about 1990 may contain asbestos in some fibre-cement products; if in doubt, we recommend testing before any work that disturbs it. More on painting in Belconnen.

Kaleen painting FAQs

Can you paint our stained timber doors white?

Yes, with the right preparation: cleaning, sanding and a tannin-blocking primer so the old stain doesn’t bleed through.

Our eaves are fibre-cement. Can they be painted?

Usually, if they’re in sound condition. In older homes they may contain asbestos, so we clean them gently and never sand them.

Do you paint pergolas and outdoor timber?

Yes. Painted pergolas, posts and screens are common on Kaleen homes, and they need the same preparation as the rest of the exterior timber.

Nearby suburbs we also paint

Kaleen is part of Belconnen. Belconnen was one of the first districts built outside Canberra’s original city. Many of its homes are now forty to fifty years old and due for a proper exterior repaint. See all the Canberra areas we paint, or read our guide to painting costs in Canberra.
